The Knave and the Moon by Rachel Gillig
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The unexpected and shocking twist at the end of the first book in the duology comes to a satisfying conclusion In The Knave and the Moon where we begin by following a beaten (but not defeated) Diviner, a power-hungry young king and a cast of amazing other characters who range from heartwarming and hilarious to heartless and villainous. Gillig is sometimes ruthless with the characters, even with the main ones but it just works. Perfection.
The story is well written, dark, romantic, heartbreaking, and even funny. This is one of my current favorite writers and I think part of the attraction is the fact that Rachel Gillig is a master at balancing all facets of fantasy and romance, the drama with the humor, the darkness with the lightness…
Highly, highly recommend it.
