To Have and to Hoax by Martha Waters

I have been reading amazing books so it’s weird that within the same week I picked up two that were not exactly on par with all the others (I read several books at the same time).
This seemed like just the thing as a palate cleanser after reading a few wonderful but rather heavy novels. I love a funny story (can’t beat a well-written rom com) and the idea of a regency rom-com really piqued my curiosity.
Now, a caveat: I listened to the audio book and I have a feeling that I might have enjoyed a little more if I actually read it. The female voice was fine but the male voice was like a caricature. Very snooty and sounding much older to me than the character’s actual age. He came out sounding like a dreadful snob.
Now for the actual story. It had a lot of very funny moments but the whole miscommunication trope just didn’t land well with me. I could have let one misunderstanding pass but they kept making the same mistake over and over again. At one point I swear the whole thing was there just as an excuse for more make-up sex scenes.
I found myself rushing to finish it because it kept going around in circles.
A quick, light-hearted read with very little plot.
