As a long-time language nerd I absolutely loved this book and all the “secrets” revealed within. Great job Marco Neves in telling such a long and anything-but-simple story of how a language evolved to what it is nowadays, raising the question of how the Portuguese of the future will be like. I have already noticed the difference between the language I spoke when I lived in Portugal a lifetime ago to the language that is spoken today with all its recent influences: words in English, slang borrowed from our Brazilian brothers, etc…
Neves uses a easy-flowing story-telling narrative which makes the facts and history palatable and easier to understand for everyone, not just linguists. Language is indeed fascinating.
