A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
A friend could not recommend this book enough so I had to read it, of course. I bought the paperback and also the audio so I could listen to it during my commute. Let me tell you, a narrator can make or destroy the story and after a few chapters of listening to it, I told my friend I was about to quit.
The narrator made Freya sound like someone who I would most definitely avoid at all costs and the accent…I’m a linguist and the fact that the narrator was reading everything with a strong Nordic accent really pulled me out of the story. It would have been ok if the book was in third person and the only time the accent showed up was in dialogue, but the book is in first person so the WHOLE thing was narrated with a harsh accent and a tone that made Freya sound cold and violent. Annoying.
Thankfully I decided to switch to reading the paperback instead. Wow, what a difference. I immediately got hooked on the story and the characters took on a whole new perspective for me . I no longer disliked Freya and really liked the book’s premise.
I already have book 2 lined up and can’t wait to find out what happens next. Kudos Ms. Jensen.
